Modern sealed hardwoods are generally easiest to clean as they are highly water-resistant and hold up well under everyday use. Just make sure to avoid ammonia and wax – these products will cause streaking. The first step is to sweep and dust using a brush-laden vacuum, broom, or static dry mop. When it comes to mopping, choose a mild and gentle cleaning product and dilute it well in a bucket of warm water. After mopping the floor, dry it immediately and give it a good buffing.
Pre-Finished Hardwood Floors
Pre-finished hardwoods have individually sealed slacks but unsealed cracks in between. Again, you’ll want to use a vacuum, broom, or dry mop to perform regular sweeping and dusting. When mopping, make sure you don’t use too much water. Use a slightly damp mop with a gentle solution. Follow by immediately drying and buffing the wood.
Unfinished Hardwood Floors
Unfinished hardwoods deliver wonderful old-fashioned charm. Keep them swept and dusted on a regular basis using a vacuum, broom, or dry mop. When you’re ready to mop, mix one cup of white vinegar in one gallon of warm water. Use only a slightly damp mop with this solution. Mineral spirits may be used to clean any problem areas. Following mopping, use a paste wax rubbed into the floor in a circular motion. Let air dry, then buff.
